TRAVEL TIPS

Planning Your Time

To get a true feel for the charm and chaos of Marrakesh, a stay of at least five full days is recommended. Deciding exactly where to stay depends largely on personal taste and budget. Inside the ancient walled medina, cozied up in a traditional riad, you’ll never be far from the souks and historic sights. Most are reached on foot through a muddle of alleys with a taxi stand usually no more than a short walk from the front door. Small taxis and horse-drawn carriages can navigate to other points in the medina or into the nouvelle ville neighborhood. Families may prefer to opt for modern hotels in Hivernage or Guéliz where the vibe is more European. The streets here are safe (though the paving often broken and hazardous) and taxis are plentiful for the short hop to the medina. Farther afield is the luscious Palmery, oozing exclusivity and offering boutique hotels for idyllic days of total relaxation to a sound track of birdsong. The drawback here is that transport into town gets costly, at around 150 DH for a taxi each way.
