TRAVEL TIPS

Timing and Precautions

You could spend an hour alone at the Palacio de la Moneda—try to time your visit with the changing of the guard, which takes place every other day at 10 am on weekdays, and 11 on weekends. Under the Plaza de la Constitución, which is on the Alameda side of the Moneda, there’s the Centro Cultural Palacio la Moneda—a culture, arts, and exhibition space with a few shops and cafés. Across the Alameda, take at least an hour and a half to explore Iglesia San Francisco, the adjacent museum, and the Barrio París-Londres. You could easily spend a bookish half hour perusing the stacks at the Biblioteca Nacional, where you can also get 30 minutes of free Internet if you present identification. Plan for an hour or more at Cerro Santa Lucía with its splendid view of the city and adjacent crafts markets.
