Plaza de la Ciudadanía

On the south side of the Palacio de la Moneda, this plaza was inaugurated in December 2006 as part of a public works program in preparation for the celebration of the bicentenary of Chile's independence in 2010. Beneath the plaza is the Centro Cultural Palacio de la Moneda, an arts center that puts on interesting exhibitions. The Artesanías de Chile crafts shop there has top-quality work, and the Tienda Centro Cultural is a good place to buy unusual souvenirs and jewelry. Also here are a restaurant, a café, a bookshop, and two movie theaters.
